Garden
In 2023, I became a homeowner, and consequently, a gardener. My prior experience was very limited, so I have been learning as I go. I have a feeling I might not be very good at this yet, but I'm certainly enjoying it.
My heart is set on native plants. The closer it can be found to us, the better. If it doesn't naturally grow in the state, I'm not very interested.
West Backyard
The sunniest garden where I try to emulate a shrub-steppe environment.
East Backyard
Sits beneath a mature Douglas fir. Here, the focus is a low-montane environment.
South Backyard
A long, sunny fence line. Perfect for a row of golden currants.
Retaining Wall
Separating the driveway and the backyard, this shady ten-foot-tall retaining wall features a series of terraced garden beds. Getting only pockets of sun and a thorough amount of Douglas fir litter, mid-montane plants are planted here.
Small Retaining Wall
This five-foot retaining wall features a narrow garden bed on top and a few scattered pockets of soil.
Canal
A large pipe runs underground here, carrying irrigation water. Technically a right-of-way, this is a long and narrow stretch of soil underneath Douglas fir and ponderosa trees. Here, the vines of western clematis have plenty of fence to conquer.
Driveway
At the top of the retaining wall, this shallow and narrow garden bed was intially covered in English ivy. We planted strawberries here shortly after moving in. Today, they tightly compete with fireweed and other native species.
Garage
Between the sidewalk and garage, this long garden bed was originally home to a whole lot of irises.
